: CANNON BREWPUB HISTORY
If the Cannon Brewpub had an old man, it would be Jim Newman. A U.S. Army Ranger, Jim had just returned Stateside from Haiti when he attended a party hosted by Dr. Jack Blalock. At the soiree, he was introduced to a kindred soul named William Gantt. Their conversation soon turned to the quality of beer in Columbus. Needless to say, the tone was bitter and the language seasoned with expletives. When Jim explained that in Oregon, where he came of age, there was a vibrant scene of restaurants and bars that housed their own microbreweries that crafted their own distinct beers that could only be enjoyed at the source, Gantt understandably replied, "$#@*!".
What began as a conversation soon became an obsession and, in 1996, the firm Warner and Worth was incorporated to see their shared dream come true.
Homebrew Columbus, Georgia.
After three long years of hard work and struggle, the Cannon Brewpub served their first locally brewed beer, the Red Jacket, on May 28th, 1999 to a public eager to enjoy a native pint. And as those first patrons sat down to their suds, they became the first people in Columbus to taste a home-brewed beer since 1910, long before the years of Prohibition.
Picking up our dusty and rusted mantle, Jim Newman made a promise to us all: "The Cannon Brewpub is going to be a local brewery, done by local people for the local residents. All our beers are going to reflect Columbus." And all these years later, with the Brew Board full of beers, Jim's promise still stands.
Tour the Brewpub.
The brewpub consist of two main areas - a barside dining area and pizza side dining area. The brewery located in the barside area is the central feature of the Brewpub. Dominating the rear of the building, it reaches from below floor level to the ceiling, 20 feet tall. The copper-topped bar, directly in front of it, provides a place where patrons can watch their favorite beer being brewed.
Belt driven fans hang beneath the wood-beamed ceiling. Wall sculpture, castings, historic artifacts, flags and antique prints give the Cannon Brewpub a festive party atmosphere.
This wood and metal sculpture traces the history of Columbus industry and community development. It features prominent buildings and businesses in the Columbus and Ft. Benning area. The sculpture is on loan from SunTrust Bank.
One of the most unusual features of the Cannon Brewpub is the ceiling fan system. The fans are built from line shafts and pulleys that once ran textile mills.
These overhead belt driven fans not only move air, but are also a visual attraction in the pub.
For a change in the atmosphere the Cannon offers a dining room with a quieter, more family-oriented feel. Featuring a wood-burning pizza oven and a 1920s Mathushek player piano, it helps to give our guests a place to call their own.
